Yankee Come Home
There are few places where American visitors will find a warmer welcome than that extended by the Newfoundland people. Newfoundlanders accredit the United States for liberating them from poverty during the Second World War. Many would argue that the island and its people endured third world conditions before it was recognized for its strategic importance with the installation of several military, naval and air force bases. The ensuing construction boom was the first alternative to fishing that local people ever experienced. Furthermore, the American Government paid the local workers in cash dollars. Another first, for generations of Newfoundlanders had subsisted in a mercantile economy based on truck and trade.

Despite years of tenure under British rule the ‘Yanks’ were the first to recognize the beauty of the island. They invested in infrastructure, explored the wilds and embraced the culture. Theirs was a true immersion highlighted by a capture of 20,000 Newfoundland girls who followed their hearts and married American servicemen. Most notable however has been the many acts of kindness and generosity the American’s extended to the people of Newfoundland. From as far back as the days of sail and economic trade, to the haven provided to overseas airline passengers following the horrific events witnessed on Sept 9, 2001, the United States has made countless gifts and offerings to Newfoundlanders.

In celebration of this very special and longstanding relationship the Harbour House Inn has created a number of corporate packages which guarantee that your teams input is only surpassed by what you take back!
